THE JAKE BURTON CARPENTER
SHINOLA GIFT SET
A TIMELESS TRIBUTE IN HONOR OF THE UNDENIABLE IMPACT
THAT JAKE HAD ON ALL OF US.
In November 2019, the world lost one of the greatest pioneers of this generation, Jake Burton Carpenter, founder of Burton Snowboards and widely deemed the godfather of snowboarding. From humble beginnings in the backhills of Vermont, Jake changed the world and fostered an entirely new culture, community, and lifestyle by having as much fun as possible. He was, and will forever be, the most influential snowboarder of all time.
Ride on Jake!
In my mind, this project is not only a well‑deserved nod to Jake, but also to the entire Carpenter family. From Donna to George to Taylor to Timi. They have each played a vital role in a family unit that has been through a lot and touched so many.
Founder of Shinola
IN COLLABORATION WITH MANY OF JAKE'S CLOSEST FRIENDS AND FAMILY, WE CREATED THIS LIMITED-EDITION GIFT SET IN CELEBRATION OF HIS LIFE AND LEGACY.
Available as one complete package, each piece in the gift set detailed down below has a special connection to Jake. It includes Shinola’s Duck Watch custom-detailed in Jake’s honor, a replica of Burton’s first production board, the nicest cooler bag you’ll ever own, and a hardcover coffee table book that shares Jake’s story in a way that’s never been shared before.
MANY YEARS AGO, JAKE CALLED ME AND SAID, "THERE'S A REALLY COOL GUY WHO SITS ON THE BOARD AT BURTON AND I WANT TO GET TO KNOW HIM BETTER.
He’s into sports and I’m thinking of inviting him to a U of M game at the Big House on a Saturday and a Detroit Lions vs the New York Giants game the following Sunday.” The really cool guy was Shinola Founder, Tom Kartsotis. And I believe that was Jake’s first time visiting Detroit and the beginning of a wonderful friendship that carried beyond their business relationship. I am honored to be a part of this watch project, working with Jake’s family and the Burton and Shinola teams to create this special tribute to Jake.
Jake’s right-hand man
Shinola x Burton JBC Duck Watch
The latest watch in the Shinola Great Americans Series is dedicated to the man himself—Jake Burton Carpenter. Built upon Shinola’s most rough-and-tumble sport watch, the Duck, this limited-edition piece is custom detailed to honor the legend (and survive anything you throw at it).
Crafted from stainless steel and extra thick sapphire crystal, this watch harkens back to vintage Burton Performer boards with detailing that includes a 3D image on the caseback of Jake riding the BB1. Adventure-proof and with the attitude to prove it, the Duck is the perfect tribute to the man who taught us all to have as much fun as possible.
13: THE STORY OF JAKE BURTON CARPENTER
A full-size, hardbound coffee table book with an eclectic mix of images gathered from family, friends, and world-class photographers, 13: The Story of Jake Burton Carpenter tells the tale of his extraordinary life in a way that has never been told before. It pulls back the curtain on the turns he took in his meteoric rise to the top—from the chaos of his youth to his final days on snow standing sideways. But this is not just the story of how an entrepreneur and his family built the world’s most successful snowboard company. Or how Jake, an innovator, made many of his company’s biggest decisions from a chairlift, not a desk. It is a deep dive inside the mind of a man who always put the soul of snowboarding first.
REPLICA BURTON BACKHILL BOARD
Debuting in 1979, the BB1 (Burton Backhill) was the first production board that Jake ever put out into the world and forever holds a special place in the hearts of those who stand sideways. This is also the board that Jake is riding in the iconic image that’s etched into the back of the Shinola watch. More than just some department store toy, the BB1 was offered in regular and goofy versions that were lightweight, featured tool-free binding adjustments, and had both top and bottom graphics.
Intended as more of a display piece, this BB1 definitely wouldn’t pass Jake’s durability test.
LEATHER COOLER BAG
A relentless passion for product innovation is what always drove Jake; that and stylish practicality. When Step On was first developed, Jake gifted a set of limited-edition boots and bindings to all Burton employees. Instead of packaging the boots in a boring ol’box, he developed a convertible carrying case that doubled as a backpack cooler. It’s what inspired this packaging for his book. Amongst many things, Jake took pride in how he transported his beverages. We think he would be proud of this one.
Cheers to Jake!
