– Our Playground –

When it comes to protecting our playground, we’re keyed in on action and advocacy. We’re reducing carbon emissions and diverting waste from the landfill at global headquarters. The Burton US Open has been carbon neutral since 2017 and we are working toward producing a zero waste event. We are striving to repair at least 40% of warranty claims to keep Burton gear in use as long as possible. Most importantly, we use our momentum to set an example and speak out on policy issues that impact people and our planet.”

We’re rapidly minimizing our impact on the planet. We focus on practical change and constant progression, both locally and globally. By greening our own house and collaborating with other industry leaders like Protect Our Winters to advocate for strong climate policy, we’re committed to being as earth-friendly as possible while maximizing our positive impact.

Climate Change

The signs of climate change are clear, especially through the eyes of a snowboarder – extreme weather, decreased snow accumulation, and melting glaciers among them. We’re working hard to reduce our own carbon footprint and promote renewable energy generation through improvements to operations and changes to product design and manufacturing. However, our impacts as an individual company alone can’t stop worldwide emissions. Which is why we work to multiply our impact globally by influencing positive climate policy.

Burton US Open Snowboarding Championships

The Burton U∙S∙Open Snowboarding Championships has been a carbon neutral event since 2017. We tally up the electricity, fuel, and waste generated to produce the event – from snowmaking and set-up through concert electricity and venue breakdown. We then offset our carbon footprint by financing renewable energy projects. Burton is working toward producing a zero waste U.S. Open. Sorting through all event waste by hand, in 2020 we diverted 83% away from the landfill toward reuse, recycling, and composting.

Creative Commuting

We promote “creative commuting” at our global headquarters, and have even won a few state and national awards for our efforts. We keep a fleet of free loaner bikes available, tune employees’ bikes each spring, provide free DIY repair workshops, have multiple showers onsite, and offer preferred parking for bikers and carpoolers. On top of that, our parking lot includes two electric vehicle charging stations.

BICEP and Protect Our Winters

Since 2013, Burton has partnered with the Ceres BICEP network and Protect Our Winters (POW) to affect systemic political solutions to climate change. POW helps passionate outdoor people protect the places and lifestyles they love from climate change. Burton speaks out to influence lawmakers and empowers our community to join us in taking positive climate action. Burton leadership members and athletes travel to Capitol Hill annually to lobby for strong climate policy.

Waste Reduction

In 2012, we set out to reduce landfill waste at our global headquarters. This goal was accomplished in less than one year by instituting new 30 composting and recycling stations. In our “Kick the Can” campaign, employees gave up their personal trash cans for a fast-lane to the keg at company parties. We also conduct covert waste-sorts, secretly saving office waste and then sorting through it by hand to find opportunities for improvement. By year two of this initiative, we reduced our office landfill waste by 20%. We're continuously improving.

Sustainability Collaboration

Burton is a founding member of the Climate Action Corps, which is a collaborative model for alignment, action and accountability to achieve industry-wide greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions in accordance with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) guidelines. We have also been active in the development of the HIGG Index, which is a suite of tools for companies to measure and benchmark sustainability performance of a material, product, facility, or brand.
