We Launched a Poly Bag Alternative — It’s Just Paper

We partnered with our friends at Vela to launch a poly bag alternative, called Glassine (gla-ˈsēn). This new bag is simple: it is just paper, designed to protect your Burton product and then be easily recycled.

**PLEASE RECYCLE THESE BAGS AS PAPER**

Single-use plastic bags serve a purpose for less than a winter season...

Yet they persist in the environment for hundreds of years. As a result, single-use plastic packaging accounts for nearly half* of the plastic waste found in nature. Despite only 9% of all plastic waste being recycled, plastic production is expected to double over the next two decades.* Vela bags are globally curbside recyclable and use water-based ink and non-toxic, recycling compatible glue. This work supports Burton in our goal to eliminate single-use plastics from our packaging with an alternative that keeps your gear and our environment protected.

Plastic Pollution is a Problem

Fossil-fuel derived plastic bags (AKA “Poly bags”) are used universally across the globe to transport apparel and outerwear from production to the rider. These bags serve an important purpose, and contribute to a devastating reality: pollution in our waterways and ecosystems and microplastics in our bodies and our planet. Microplastics have found their way onto the snowpack in our highest mountains and into our deepest oceans. We believe that Burton packaging should not be a part of this problem, despite how common poly bags are in our industry.

Progression is a journey

Your first attempt at a new trick is usually a little sketch before you dial it in. Which is why we approach every aspect of sustainability R&D by balancing impact to the rider, the product, and the industry with impact to the planet. We’ve set aggressive science-based goals to ensure we continue to lead the industry, and we push ourselves to be innovators in the space of minimizing our impact to the planet. You are seeing innovation and progression in real time while we activate a new way of delivering your gear. Thank you for being a part of progressing our sport.

PEOPLE & PLANET-FRIENDLY MATERIALS

We're here to make products that get you outside. The last thing we want is for our gear to harm the playground we love.

Sorting Symbols- We are committed to the most up-to-date global markings to help support effective circular material management in every region of the world that Burton product lives. These markings give clear guidance in countries with robust circular packaging material programs.

Q: This feels like wax paper, are you sure it’s not coated in something?

A: Yes! The glass-like finish is created by the process called Supercalendering. The paper sheets are passed through heated or cooled pressurized rollers to orient the wood fibers, increase density, and reduce porosity. This process is what makes these bags so great for our application. It is just paper.

Q: There are creases and small rips in my bags. Should I be concerned?

A: Packaging is not meant to live forever. Its primary function is to get your Burton gear from the hands of the maker to you, and then be recycled to become another useful material. It is expected to see wear and tear. We have done thorough testing for these bags to protect your product. Simply cut or tear the bag open, recycle it, and have as much fun as possible with your new Burton good. Should you have any quality concerns for the product, reach out to one of our Guides. Burton’s warranty programs are designed to make sure you are all set.

Q: I need to return my item; how do I do this with a Vela Bag?

A: If the bag is usable, go ahead and place your product back into it, tuck the flap closed (no need to tape or seal it), and insert it into the shipping packaging in accordance with Burton’s return guidelines. If the bag is too torn, please simply recycle the Vela bag and insert your product directly into the original shipping packaging. Per Burton return guidelines, if the original shipping packaging is damaged, please source alternative packaging. Please DO NOT ship product directly in the Vela bag. This will result in a violation of the return policy. Chat with any of our Guides if you desire additional clarification on your returns!

Q: Are there other brands that use Vela Bags?

A: Yes! Here is a list of some other brands that are committed to fighting the plastic pollution crisis by exiting their use of poly bags.

Q: I just received a traditional plastic poly bag from Burton. WTF?

A: As we transition to paper-based bags, there will still be some plastic in our inventory. It takes a little time to phase out of everything across the globe. Please reuse or recycle the poly bag if you are able to!
