1: A Brief History of Burton EST Bindings

Burton EST Bindings: EST bindings research and development

Burton EST snowboard bindings were developed simultaneously with The Channel mounting system in the early 2000s. The goal at that time was to evolve beyond Burton’s 3D mounting pattern to an interface that supported a wider range of stance options, required less hardware, and surpassed the existing snowboard binding performance standards. The Channel achieved many of these goals in 2007/2008, but it was EST bindings in 2008 that truly enabled an enhanced board “feel” unlike anything riders had yet to experience.

Prior to The Channel/EST, most snowboard binding mounting hardware was located directly underneath the rider’s foot, including the discs, screws, and inserts. Burton engineers discovered that this traditional underfoot placement could sometimes create noticeable “dead spots” that caused the snowboard to flex inconsistently. EST changed all of this by moving the mounting hardware out to either side of the foot so riders could experience a natural snowboard flex from tip to tail.

Now, The Channel mounting system is king at Burton, and you’ll find it on all snowboards manufactured after 2014. Combining EST snowboard bindings with The Channel is the key to unlocking the full potential of your ride.

2: EST Binding Components

Burton EST Bindings: EST bindings overview with labels

While Burton EST snowboard bindings deliver next-level performance and board feel, their components will feel very familiar to most snowboarders. However, there are a few key differences to be aware of.

First of all, mounting points have been moved out from under the foot to either side of the binding and these mounting points are only compatible with snowboards that feature The Channel. Secondly, some Burton EST models feature a hinge at the point where the heelcup connects to the footbed. This hinge provides more lateral flexibility in the binding, reducing rider fatigue on long days.

In general, EST snowboard binding components include:

  • Hiback
  • Forward Lean Adjuster (FLAD)
  • Toe and ankle straps
  • Heelcup
  • Baseplate
  • Footbed

3: Pros of Burton EST Bindings

Burton EST Bindings: Riders carving

There are three main pros to Burton EST snowboard bindings: enhanced performance, improved board feel, and a greater range of stance adjustment options.

First, enhanced performance of EST bindings begins with better foot-to-board energy transfer, which is achieved with the removal of underfoot mounting discs and associated hardware. In turn, this allows the bindings to be more stable on the snowboard, allowing for a more direct connection during turn initiation. Additionally, EST bindings featuring The Hinge can deliver different flex and response patterns, from the baseplate up to the hiback. You’ll also find a variety of footbed materials across the EST range, each offering unique riding characteristics.

Second, improved snowboard feel is attributed to the EST’s outboard mounting points which are located on either side of each binding. By eliminating discs and underfoot hardware from the equation, EST bindings allow the snowboard to flex more naturally, eliminating the inconsistencies that some riders report with conventional snowboard bindings.

Finally, in terms of stance adjustment, it doesn’t get much better than EST bindings. Thanks to the magic of geometry, and the reduction of mounting hardware to just four screws, EST bindings provide an almost limitless range of stance adjustments. With EST, riders can quickly and easily adjust the width, angle, centering, and setback of their stance, just by loosening (not removing) the M6 screws. On-hill binding adjustments literally can’t get any easier.

4: Cons of Burton EST Bindings

There is one potential disadvantage to Burton EST snowboard bindings, and it really comes down to compatibility.

Because EST bindings are only compatible with The Channel mounting system, there are fewer snowboards that these bindings can be mounted on. This can be slightly limiting if you have an extensive collection of non-Channel snowboards.

However, given the improvements in board feel and performance that you get when you pair EST snowboard bindings with The Channel mounting system, we’re confident that once you’ve tried them, you won’t want to go back.

Pro tip: Concerned about compatibility with EST bindings? Check out Burton Re:Flex snowboard bindings. Re:Flex bindings are compatible with just about every snowboard mounting interface ever made, are available in a variety of boot interfaces (including traditional straps and Step On®), and can be personalized with several different stiffness profiles.

5: Burton EST Bindings vs. Other Snowboard Bindings

Burton EST Bindings: Positioning EST bindings on snowboard

As of 2023, there is no other snowboard binding on the market that matches the boot-to-board feel that EST delivers (based on hundreds of product reviews from riders of all experience levels over the years). And with exclusive features like The Hinge, you’ll enjoy greater flexibility, resulting in less fatigue over the day.

EST snowboard bindings are only compatible with snowboards featuring The Channel mounting interface, but this shouldn’t feel like a limitation since every modern Burton snowboard is compatible. Plus, some other snowboard manufacturers have adopted The Channel mounting interface too, providing more options to pair EST snowboard bindings with the board you want to ride.

Not only are EST bindings paired with The Channel quicker and easier to adjust than 3-hole and 4-hole underfoot mounting interfaces, but they also offer an improved range of adjustability for stance width, angle, centering, and setback.

6: Frequently Asked EST Questions

If you’re shopping around for your first pair of snowboard bindings, or looking to upgrade your existing setup, you probably have some questions about Burton EST bindings. Never fear, we’ve heard them all, so we went ahead and assembled some of the most common questions that the Burton Guides receive.

Q: Are Burton EST snowboard bindings compatible with my snowboard?

A: Burton EST snowboard bindings must be paired with snowboards that feature The Channel mounting interface. This will include most modern Burton snowboards (manufactured after 2014), as well as other manufacturers’ snowboards that feature The Channel.

Q: Do Burton EST bindings work with non-Burton snowboards?

A: If your snowboard has The Channel mounting interface, then Burton EST snowboard bindings are compatible. If your snowboard does not have The Channel mounting interface, then Burton EST snowboard bindings are not compatible.

Q: Are Burton EST bindings good for beginners?

A: Burton EST snowboard bindings are great for riders of every ability level and are available in a variety of different models with varying degrees of flexibility. For newer riders who are just getting started with snowboarding, consider a medium-flex snowboard binding which can make learning the fundamentals a little bit easier. Consult Burton’s Snowboard Binding Size Chart and Buyer's Guide for more information about binding flexibility and response.

Q: Are EST bindings difficult to set up?

A: Burton EST bindings are engineered to be quick and easy to set up. This is a reality because we ditched the traditional underfoot mounting discs, moved the mounting points outboard, and reduced the number of M6 mounting screws to just two per binding. Plus, it’s super easy to tweak EST bindings once they’re already mounted: simply back out the screws slightly and adjust stance width, angle, centering, and setback, all at the same time.
